Xiaomi’s typically budget-focused Redmi brand is usually all about getting more for less. Unless that is, you’re living in India and happen to want (and can afford) one of the company’s limited-edition Redmi K20 Pro smartphones. Toting a massive price tag, you’ll get what you pay for — provided you don’t mind paying for a gold smartphone.
And you’ll pay about ₹4,80,000 (yep, that’s how they write it) — which translates to about R98,000. That’s a whole lot of money for any smartphone, though the fact that it’s made from gold might have something to do with it. Redmi India is at pains to point out that it’s not merely gold plated, and that it’ll be embellished with diamonds. That’s a little bonkers.

If you disregard the gold casing, the Redmi K20 Pro (which won’t turn up here under that name) arrives with a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, and between 64GB and 256GB of storage. There’s a terrific triple camera arrangement, with a stock 48MP sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a 13MP wide-angle sensor on the rear. The spec more than justifies the approximately R5,650 RRP for the stock version of the handset.
But jacking the price up by nearly R100,000? Even for a mostly gold smartphone, that seems a little extreme. But you don’t need to take our word for it. Just add one of the limited-to-20 Redmi K20 Pro handsets to your cart and your insurance company will have an embolism trying to convince you not to pay for it.
