Man, these product tie-ins are getting complicated. Last week Microsoft teased a throwback to its initial Windows operation system, Windows 1.0. At the time, we had no idea why all the time travel. Though we had some pretty decent ideas. Now we know. It was indeed a tie-in with Stranger Things Season 3, which released last week on that one holiday Americans are always surprised the rest of the world doesn’t celebrate.
The cross-promotion, since revealed as Windows 1.11, is a retro app that lets players “…[j]oin Eleven, Steve, Dustin and gang as they seek to save Hawkins and the world. Embrace the 80s and grab your hairspray, because it’s basically the raddest show companion experience ever. But fair warning: beware the Mind Flayer.” Which all sounds like a blast, except that we can’t have any. Windows 1.11 has been limited to the States, for now. Aww…
Access denied
Never say never when it comes to finding files on the internet, however. It might not be officially available for download anywhere outside of the States, but that probably won’t prove too challenging for anyone who has been using the internet since before Windows 95 was the OS to own. We’re not going to offer any advice there. If you happen to find a working version of Windows 1.11, more power to you. If you do locate it, check out the 775MB file size. The original Windows 1.0 appeared on several 5.25in floppy disks and takes up a colossal 1.8MB prior to installing it on a computer. Ah, how far we’ve come…
If you absolutely have to get your Stranger Things tie-in activity on (without jumping through hoops), there’s always Stranger Things 3: The Game. That’ll set you back around R340 (platform dependent) but you can play it on your Xbox One, PS4 or PC. Oh, and there are mobile and Switch versions as well. That’s gotta count for something.
