As expected, Punisher, Jessica Jones axed by Netflix

Though it’s not exactly unexpected, it’s nonetheless still a pity — Netflix has officially canned its last two Marvel offerings. Both The Punisher and Jessica Jones are no more, joining Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on the list of toys Disney wants to keep for itself.

Speaking to The Verge, a Netflix spokesperson said “Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix. In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

Gone but not for good

That doesn’t mean that the series’ are gone for good, though. Season 3 of Jessica Jones is the last Netflix-made Marvel series and is still due to broadcast later this year. Existing shows will remain on Netflix, the result of Disney and the streaming service’s partnership. At least you won’t need a Disney+ subscription to dive back into the varied connected shows.

It’s also entirely possible that the shows will live on, in one form or another (but one that will almost certainly require that Disney streaming service sub). Marvel’s Jeph Loeb posted a letter that hints that The Defenders (and possibly the shows that introduced us to the members of that New York crime-fighting club) will return — while seemingly taking a dig at Netflix at the same time. What form that return will take is uncertain but we’ll be keeping eyes and ears out for updates.
