Watch out Ready Player One, Facebook might be planning a future mildly resembling yours. By making VR headsets more affordable, it could conceivably conquer the masses. Facebook didn’t pay $2 billion for Oculus on a whim, after all.
At Facebook’s F8 keynote, Mark Zuckerberg enthusiastically announced that the Oculus Go will hit shelves soon. The headsets are already available on the official Oculus website for $199. There’s no word on how soon South Africa will see them but we haven’t made the cut of the 23 launch countries. If pricing hold steady, though, then we should be getting the Oculus Go at around the R3,000 mark. We hope.
The existence of the Oculus Go isn’t news, though we didn’t know much about what lives inside it when we first found out about the headset in October last year. That’s changed.
Spec-wise, the Go is a mixture between the Oculus Rift and the Gear VR. It tracks head rotation, but not full motion, and it uses a remote control with limited pointing abilities. The really cool thing is that it functions as a standalone product rather than being powered by a smartphone — which makes it accessible to people with other Android devices or iPhones.
It supports the Gear VR game and app catalog, along with VR games like Jurassic World: Blue that immerses you into the dino-ridden island, and Space Explorers, that lets you witness the lives of NASA astronauts as they navigate their training and missions.
