Light Start – VR in space, Nissan’s custom Armada, Netflix’s Cargo, and The Black Masses

For now, this VR video shot in space is as close as we’re going to get to orbiting the Earth

If we got the chance to head into space, we’d go for it. It’s an activity that has very few people have achieved and… come on, it’s space. But… we’re not going to pass any physical exams or afford a ticket on a rocket any time soon so this short film, filmed by National Geographic and a company called Humaneyes Technologies, is about as close as we’re going to get. You can watch the short film here but for best results, pop your phone into Google’s Cardboard or one of its many clones, or check it out in a Gear VR or an Oculus or whichever VR setup you have handy and see just what the International Space Station, and space, would look like if you were really there.

When going 4x4ing, you’re going to want Nissan’s custom Armada Mountain Patrol

Let’s just start by saying that this vehicle doesn’t exist yet and when it does, it’s going to appear in the States. Nissan is working on a customised SUV (which we’d use to travel off-road here in South Africa) called the Armada Mountain Patrol and they’re using their social media platforms to get folks to device just how this vehicle will be kitted out. The vehicles wheel style, vinyl, and which tent will be built into the Armada Mountain Patrol will be up to social media to sort out. Once the voting is done, Nissan will be taking the custom 5.8 litre V8 to the 2018 Overland Expo West in Arizona. What they won’t be doing it putting it on sale. Which is a pity, because we’d totally hand over (someone’s) cash so we could roll this thing down a mountainside in the Drakensberg.

Cargo puts Martin Freeman in charge of an infant in an Australian zombie apocalypse

The first of two zombie-themed entrants for this week, Cargo is a new film from Netflix starring Martin Freeman (Lord of the Rings, Sherlock, Ali G: In Da House) as a father who has to take care of an infant daughter while lost in the Australian outback during a zombie apocalypse. This… isn’t quite the movie we would expect from this scenario but, based on the trailer above, it is the one we got. There’s less gratuitous violence, for one, and the film seems to be more about the people than the zombies. Freeman’s character is bitten and he needs to make an arrangement for his little one before he becomes a zombie himself. Wait, is this shaping up to be a properly emotional story that just happens to include the walking dead?

The Black Masses trailer teases a zombie game with a difference (demons, for one)

No, The Black Masses isn’t a new hipster group of musicians with ironic beards and intentional suspenders. It’s a new entrant in the zombie survival genre of games, but it’s adding a twist that we’ve not seen (much of) yet. Imagine taking on a bunch of “…demon possessed souls while trying to solve the mysteries of what started the satanic uprising”, all on a 16-square kilometre island. A medieval-themed island, at that. Sounds like a recipe for using fortifications and edged weapons against the ravening horde to us. Developer Brilliant Game Studios is responsible for the Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator (which lets you pit chickens — or other armies — against any army you think is hard enough) and they’re using that engine to create The Black Masses. It’s still in teaser mode right now but we’re going to be keeping an eye on this one.
