Light Start – Pirate Samsung, smarter photos, falling Switches, and Payback

You’ll always remember this as the day that you almost… bought a Galaxy S8?

If you eat, sleep, and breathe Pirates of the Caribbean you’re probably a Disney executive. If not, then you’re probably the type who would get their hands on this limited edition Samsung Galaxy S8, which has been themed around the newest Pirates of the Caribbean film. Loosely. That’s because it’s basically an S8 in a nifty box, with a themed case, and a… custom wallpaper? Seriously? Not even some cursed pirate gold or some barnacles or anything? The alternate version of the phone is selling online and it’s unlikely that you’ll ever wind up buying one. But… a thing like this exists. We just thought you should know. If you were a real pirate, you’d figure out a way to steal one. Using a boat.

Arsenal will support your photographic abilities — if it’s funded, that is

What is Arsenal? It’s “…the world’s first intelligent assistant for DSLR and mirrorless cameras”, if you believe the Kickstarter pitch. It’s a little add-on for your camera that makes use of neural networks and a smartphone app (and a touch of hardware) to let you remotely snap more impressive images. It sounds to us a little like taking the photographer out of photography and replacing him with a computer but folks seem to want that. The project was looking for $50,000 and so far has raised more than 16 times that amount in funding. Expect Arsenal to launch in January 2018, assuming all goes to plan.

Someone dropped a Nintendo Switch from 1,000 feet because YouTube views

We’ve seen drop tests before. They’re usually phones, they’re done in a lab, and the drop distance is about two metres. So of course if you want to grab everyone’s attention you take a Nintendo Switch, attach it to a drone in a parking lot, and drop it from 1,000 feet (300 metres). If you want to see the results for yourself you’ll see them in the video above (in between all… the… talking…) but long story short, the Switch survives. Not all of it, true, as one of the Joy-Con handles is obliterated, but the Switch itself still functions. That’s not a bad testimonial for Nintendo’s console, which has been impressing us in all sorts of other ways since its release. This is just another one to add to the pile.

Revenge is going to happen this year with Need for Speed: Payback

Wait, we’ve been here before. We’re pretty sure about that. Wasn’t this the plot of the very first Fast and the Furious film? The trailer for Electronic Arts’ newly revealed Need for Speed: Payback very nearly mirrors that film’s opening scene, at any rate. Just what the gameplay is going to look like we’re not sure about but it seems to be heading into a mixture of the Underground games, with the cops from Most Wanted and a few Hollywood scriptwriters sprinkled onto the top. We’d be… strangely okay with that. Expect Payback to launch on 10 November this year, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
