Black Ops III: Zombies Chronicles detailed, available for pre-order

Remember that extra DLC for Black Ops III announced last week? It is called Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies Chronicles in its full incarnation and it’s definitely going to be arriving on 16 May — as long as you own the game on PlayStation 4. Aside from the name clarification, that’s all stuff we know. But Activision have unleashed more details of the zombie-killing throwback and it’s looking… old. But in a Helen Mirren kinda way.

First, in a move that bears no reflection on Dame Mirren (anyone who can make Stephen Colbert reboot deserves ALL the respect), here is a story trailer that shows you nothing at all about how the DLC will play.

Once your eyeballs have finished their massage, here’s what’s going on in the game itself. Eight maps (previously detailed) from previous Treyarch-made Call of Duty outings, as far back as World at War, are getting an audio and visual polish for the DLC. There will be some new gameplay elements, like the ability to use custom weaponry, found throughout and weapons from the most recent outing will be usable from the first incarnations of the game.

And, to promote the launch, the developers are staging an event called 8 Days of the Undead which will let players “…earn double XP rewards, engage in community challenges, and receive a host of free exclusive content including a Zombies calling card, weapon camo, new Gobble Gums and a PS4 theme.” Sounds decent enough. Some of this content will be available to buyers just for purchasing the game and other so-called ‘bonus’ content includes twenty vials of Liquid Divinium and two Gobble Gums. Whatever those are, they’re set to be “whimsical”.

Local pricing wasn’t included in the announcement but we live in the age of Google and international credit card transactions so we’re not too concerned there. Using the South African pre-order price for the PlayStation 4 edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies Chronicles as a guide, some zombie-killing nostalgia should set you back R460. PC and Xbox One pricing isn’t available for South Africa yet but that’s because no launch date has been set. Yet.
