You Jelly? This tiny little Android on Kickstarter runs Nougat

The Stuff team has been around. Like, long enough to remember a time when you weren’t cool until you had the smallest feature phone possible. That was a weird time. Well it might be rolling back around, if the response to the Jelly smartphone Kickstarter is any indication.

That’s because the Jelly is billing itself as the world’s smallest 4G smartphone and with dimensions of … just, it’s really small okay… parent company Unihertz might be on to something. The handset looks for all the world like an old cheapo feature phone but the innards give the lie to that impression.

That’s because the Jelly incorporates a 2.45in display (with a less-than-impressive 240×432 res), a 1.1GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB or 2GB of RAM (found in the Pro version), and either 8GB or 16GB of storage (also the Pro, for the latter). It’s also got full 4G/LTE support, dual SIM support, and a removable 950mAh battery. Oh, yes, and it runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

The Jelly smartphone is live on Kickstarter and you can secure yours for a $69 (R930) contribution for now. Assuming it all goes to plan and the handsets ship on time. Which it should do: the campaign was looking for $30,000 and they’ve sucked in over $130,000 in funding so far.

If everything works out correctly (and sometimes it doesn’t — Kickstarter is only a little less risky than the stock market), backers should get their Jelly phones in August this year. Could be very handy as a spare phone, tucked away in a sock in case of emergency. Just sayin’.
