PlayStation VR priced for South Africa, will land end January 2017

Sony’s PlayStation VR is, for a lot of gamers, currently the best shot at experiencing virtual reality in the average home we’re going to see without having to buy a massively expensive computer first. And now we know when that shot is going to take place, as well as what it’ll cost.

Ster Kinekor, Sony’s rep here in South Africa, has confirmed that the PlayStation VR will be launching locally from 24 January 2017. That means that you’ve got some time to stockpile cash for the unit, which will cost gamers R6,500 — for the basic bundle.

There is a more expensive bundle, which includes the required PlayStation Camera, that will retail for R7,300. This is the one that most local PlayStation 4 owners will wind up having to buy — Sony’s camera hasn’t seen a whole lot of use up to this point but now it’s a must-buy.

There are twelve VR-supporting titles slated for launch at the same time, ranging in price from R350 each (Here They LieHustle Kings VRSuper Stardust Ultra VRUntil Dawn: Rush of Blood) to R600 (Driveclub VRVR Worlds) to R900 (EVE: ValkyrieRIGS Mechanized Combat LeagueRobinson: The Journey) to R1,000 (Resident Evil 7). The final game, Batman VR, has yet to be priced.

Looks like we’ll be starting 2017 off with some virtual reality, then. We suspect we’ll be quite over actual reality by the point.
