Well it looks like we won’t be getting that Galaxy Note 7 we were after this year after all. At least, not unless Samsung does something drastic. The company has announced a second recall, following this up with a request for all current Note 7 users — whether they have old or replacement handset — to power their phones off and leave them off.
We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7. Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place.
We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation. Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.
Samsung is now issuing a totally global recall, one that might spell the end of the Galaxy Note 7 completely. Devices worldwide (including China, which was excluded from the first recall) are being recalled and Samsung really, really doesn’t want anyone using the phone in the meantime.
The company’s American recall page has also been updated, removing the option for a replacement Galaxy Note 7 and instead offering only a refund or a replacement Samsung smartphone. This, more than anything else, is an indicator that the Note 7 is going to disappear. Perhaps that’s for the best. Better to come back with a wholly new device at a later stage than to keep pushing this explosive proposition.
