It never rains, but it pours. A new report of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 handset exploding has hit the media in the United States. This time it’s different, however, as the new handset is reportedly one of the replacement devices that Samsung issued as part of its recall in that country.
The handset, owned by one Brian Green, set alight just prior to a flight on Southwest Airlines, forcing an evacuation of the flight while the phone was dealt with. The handset was subsequently retrieved by the Louisville Fire Department arson unit, who will be conducting an investigation as to the cause of the ignition.
Brian Green has since shared a photograph of the handset’s box which shows the markers that Samsung is using to denote a replaced or updated handset.
Samsung said, in a statement to Engadget: “Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7. We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share.”
The company obviously hopes that this is an isolated incident or is one with an external factor in play. Having the whole mess start up again from scratch would render Samsung’s very expensive recall mostly pointless. We’ll have an update once Samsung shares the results of its investigation.
