2016 could be the year of the Apple Watch 2

The Apple Watch has been on the market for a long enough time that we should be seeing a sequel any day now (even if we’ve only officially had it in South Africa since October last year). WatchOS has gone through several iterations since launch but now talk is turning towards the Apple Watch 2. If new reports, citing analyst Ming-chi Kuo, are accurate then this is what we’re going to get:

What we’re getting, according to Kuo, is a pair of Apple Watches. The larger update will be known as the Apple Watch 2, because we weren’t expecting anything less. The design isn’t set to change much from the look of the Apple Watch but it will reportedly sport a GPS radio, barometer, and a battery upgrade.

The smaller update is thought to be an iteration of the original Watch, with a smaller TSMC processor and better waterproofing being the main features here. These items should also find their way into the fuller-fledged upgrade and the updated Watch could also see the original models undergoing a price drop. We’d take that if we got it.

Previous reports have claimed that we would see an Apple Watch 2 in September this year, at the same time as Apple’s traditional smartphone reveal, and that the device would be able to operate independently of a smartphone thanks to its own cellular connection, something else that Kuo is claiming will show up in the Watch range in 2017..

A more radical change is projected for the Apple Watch in 2018, with improved health applications and other as-yet unspecified alterations.
