Trial by fire – See someone torch 9 generations of iPhone

YouTube player

What do you do with your old phones? We keep ours in a box, on a shelf in clear view, as a warning to our current phone so it knows the fate that awaits if it starts screwing around. But those are Androids – you could argue that the iPhone doesn’t get old. So why, oh why, would someone want to set nine generations of iPhone on fire. For the YouTube hits, of course.

YouTuber Zach Straley gathered together the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6, and the 6S, put them all on a tray and set them on fire. The only handsets spared his fiery wrath were the iPhone 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and the SE. We guess he was burning enough money for one video.

And, lest you believe that he was using useless husks instead of the genuine article, Straley powered on each handset and started their stopwatch functions to see which phone would last the longest before putting them to the torch. The results… were unsurprising.

The top row of iPhones actually survived, because they escaped the worst of the liquid-created flames that cooked their more expensive brethren. The iPhone 5 and onward were killed, by a combination of flame and (probably) drowning in the lighter fluid that provided their viking funeral. The earlier handsets, despite a lot of cosmetic damage, were still capable of powering on.

It should go without saying but… don’t try this at home. Also: Don’t put your iPhone in the microwave. Nothing good can come of that silliness either.
