Telkom announces phase two of Gauteng “uncapped” LTE offer

Telkom’s announced that it’s rolling out the second phase of SmartBroadband Uncapped High Speed Wireless packages to more than 200 areas in Gauteng. Users in the applicable areas can sign up for uncapped LTE accounts, on 24-month contracts. The contracts start at R599 per month and are limited in each area to 150 sign-ups per LTE base station.

The company ran the first phase of the initiative, which seeks to make better use of its LTE infrastructure, in June and says around 400 people took up the offer which was made available in 29 areas in Gauteng. Customers receive an antenna and installation by Telkom technicians as part of the deal.

“We are rolling out the second phase of the Smartbroadband Uncapped High Speed Wireless Broadband in an effort to spread this offer to more places in Gauteng and eventually around the country,” says Attila Vitai, MD of Telkom Mobile and Consumer. “After the success of the first phase, we are confident that this one-of-a-kind offering in South Africa will continue to provide high speed broadband at unprecedented value.”

Phase two’s sign up window will run from 7 September to 30 November and Telkom says the initiative will be replicated in select locations in the Western Cape and Durban thereafter.

Gauteng residence can check their eligibility here. The introductory offer will start at R599 for the first 50 customers, R699 for the second 50 and R799 for the final 50 available packages at each base station. In normal use, users can expect download speeds as high as 90Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 25Mbit/s. The offers are subject to a “fair use policy”.

Telkom’s 50GB fair usage policy cap only applies to torrent traffic, like that of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and news servers protocols (NNTP), between the hours of 12am and 6pm. Full connection speeds will be maintained during peak periods for general browsing, online gaming and video streaming.

A 10GB fair us policy also applies to the uncapped Wi-Fi portion of the deal (users get uncapped access to Telkom’s public Wi-Fi hotspots).
