Moonraker is the Nokia smartwatch you’ll never get to wear

What would happen if you crossed a Lumia smartphone with a wearable smartband? You don’t need to wonder, as Nokia was apparently working on something of the sort before Microsoft opted for the Microsoft Band instead.

MoonrakerThis… is Moonraker. Also the title of a Bond film starring not-James-Bond (i.e, anyone but Sean Connery), Nokia’s Moonraker was a prototype smartwatch that should have been released some time ago. Except, as you might have guessed, it’s never going to be.

The Verge reports that the Moonraker (we’re not sure if that was to be an official title or just a working codename) was to be launched – but Nokia never got around to it – right around the time that the Lumia 930 made its first appearance. Then Microsoft got hold of the company and switched to making their own hardware instead.

If it had arrived, users could have expected basic notifications, a handful of sensors – nothing too fancy on that score – and possibly remote camera control on their smartphones. Moonraker would have borrowed more than a little from the Windows Phone OS aesthetic for the user interface as well. Sadly, it was not to be. So we can only just dream of what seeing Moonraker in action would have been like. Roger Moore certainly would have owned one.
