Oculus Rift will start shipping in early 2016

So it’s come to this, at last. The world, or the part of it that follows tech trends, has been expecting mass-marketed virtual reality to become a thing for around 50 years. It’s had a few false starts along the way but the Oculus Rift is currently the best hope that the dream of VR in the average home will become a reality.

And that dream’s about to come true, in a few short months. Oculus have announced an on-sale period for the final version of their Oculus Rift VR headset. The time to expect it is in the first quarter of 2016, though it will be going up for pre-order some time before the end of the year.

This puts its launch into line with Sony’s Project Morpheus effort, which is expected to launch in the first half of next year. Other, competing, products will probably fall into the same timeline.

While we wait for the VR tech to hit homes, Oculus says that they’re going to be revealing more of the technical specifics of the final headset (above).

“In the weeks ahead, we’ll be revealing the details around hardware, software, input, and many of our unannounced made-for-VR games and experiences coming to the Rift. Next week, we’ll share more of the technical specifications…” And they seem to have something in mind for this year’s E3 conference as well. We’ll be keeping a close eye on that one.
