Apple could be planning to make its own virtual reality kit

With companies like Sony and Samsung developing virtual reality devices, it’s only natural that Apple is taking an interest in the technology too.

iPhone CloseThe iPhone manufacturer has advertised for a software engineer with experience of virtual reality and augmented reality technology. The job – first spotted by 9to5mac.com – reveals that Apple is looking for someone that can “create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing.”

The advertisement also says, “The individual must be able to take participate in collaborative and iterative UI design through the implementation phases & complete performant user experience code for product delivery.”

The Apple of my eye

It’s not clear exactly what Apple is working on; but some logical guesses would either be proprietary virtual reality software to work with accessories from companies like Pinc, or its own VR hardware… or maybe something completely different.

Apple has already expressed an interest in virtual reality technology, applying for a patent over six years ago for a glasses-free, stereoscopic 3D display. More recently, Taiwanese site Economic Daily News has reignited rumours that Apple is working on a glasses-free 3D display for future iPhones.

Not only that, but Apple has also bought PrimeSense, the company behind the original Xbox Kinect sensor.

So while it may be clear that Apple has a keen interest in the emerging virtual reality market, it’s still uncertain exactly it wants to produce within it. We’ll update with more news as we get it.
