All Tesla’s patents are belong to the world – Electric car manufacturer goes open source

Tesla

“Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.”

The above was written yesterday by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, discussing a move that will be lauded as momentous in years to come.

According to Musk, Tesla motors was created to advance sustainable transport, and with their success over the years, the company looked back and saw that their intellectual property “landmines” were rather ironically inhibiting the potentially huge market of electric motoring.

It’s with this sentiment that Tesla made all their patents available to the world, not only to address (what the company calls) the coming carbon crisis by allowing for a technologically sustainable future, but also to help stimulate competition.

According to Tesla then, their move is ultimately one that will not only help the world out, but also help make the company stronger, since it has a history of beating big business, competitors and expectations.

And let’s not forget Elon Musk announced all this by referencing a meme, which already makes the world a better place, if only a little.
