A peek through the viewfinder at Samsung’s NX30 camera (and friend)

Samsung NX30 compact camera and the Galaxy Camera 2 will both be making their way to South Africa at an unspecified point and we thought it might be a plan to have a closer look at what photographers will be in for when the pair eventually make their way this side of the world.

The NX30 has a 20.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor along with Samsung’s NX AF System II, which will be bringing “fast and accurate auto focusing” to a range of conditions – including action-oriented shots. The camera features a 1/8000 shutter speed, a 9fps continuous shooting mode and 1080p video capture capabilities.

Also present is a 3-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, which is able to swivel and pivot in case you’re looking at taking photos from a variety of strange angles (it always happens that way). The NX30 also has an XGA tiltable electronic viewfinder, for much the same purpose. Samsung has baked in WiFi and NFC support for the NX30 and, typically of the company, there is a huge collection of software features to make life easier for the more n00bish (or massively advanced) among us.

The Galaxy Camera 2 is also going to be showing face in SA at some point this year. The camera has a 16.3 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS sensor, powered by Android 4.3 and a 1.6GHz quad-core processor. The specs read like a typical smartphone: 2GB of system memory, 8GB of storage and support for up to 64GB extra via microSD. Samsung’s software support is in evidence and the OIS and 21x optical zoom features round out the options for the Galaxy Camera 2. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to Samsung’s first model.

Samsung South Africa’s Michael Gibson said at the event “Samsung’s commitment to delivering high quality photographs for everyday life, continues in this range of Wi-Fi and NFC capable cameras. The technical advancements of the NX30 with seamless connectivity, enable pairing the camera with a combination of compatible devices and HomeSync to allow use of the camera in the nursery and as a video baby monitor.”

Like Samsung’s U9000 TV lineup, there’s no local availability or pricing for the NX30 or the Galaxy Camera 2 yet. But, like winter, they are coming.
