Sony announces Xperia Z1 Compact at CES 2014

Sony has made a smaller version of the Xperia Z1 official, announcing the handset at CES 2014. The company has opted to not use the more common ‘mini’ label for the smartphone, dubbing the phone the Xperia Z1 Compact.

Sony is claiming that their new handset is the “world’s best premium compact smartphone” and the specifications do bear out that claim to at least some degree. The Xperia Z1 Compact will boast a 4.3-inch Triluminos display from Sony with a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 while the processor will be everyone’s favourite at the moment – the Snapdragon 800 running at 2.2GHz. The Qualcomm brains also confer LTE capabilities on the smaller phone.

Like other Xperia Z devices the Xperia Z1 Compact is rated IP55 and IP58, making it waterproof and dustproof.

There is a vague South African launch date for the handset of February this year, though pricing is unknown at present.
