Google rumoured to have a Nexus-branded set-top device in the works

Google may have designs on your TV-viewing area, an ambition that the company has had for some time. But these particular designs are new, if a reports from The Information is on the money. The report claims that Google is planning a Nexus TV device, based around Android, that will stream TV and movies from the various popular offerings – like Netflix – and which will apparently support certain games.

The report cites an unnamed Google employee for the information, also saying that the Nexus TV might launch as soon as the middle of 2014. Other specifics about the device were quite thin but it is said to include a touchpad remote and remote control via an Android smartphone.

The Verge points out that rumours of an Android set-top box have been around for a while, with the above details being confirmed by a report earlier this year. The earlier report also added that motion controls, similar to Microsoft’s Kinect, might also be a feature.

Whether Google’s Nexus TV ever sees the light of day isn’t certain, though the popularity of the Chromecast dongle might sway the search company into releasing it. Assuming it actually exists, of course.
