Apple has, following a large number of unconfirmed reports, completed its purchase of an Israel-based company called PrimeSense, which makes 3D sensor tech. PrimeSense was the company behind the initial iteration of Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral for the Xbox 360.
The confirmation comes via AllThingsD, which quotes Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet as saying that “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
The terms of the deal are still relatively secretive, though AllThingsD’s report cites sources as saying that the motion sensor company was purchased for about $360 million. Just what Apple would want PrimeSense’s sensor tech for is unknown as well, though there are loads of applications that would allow Cupertino to add gesture control to a range of its devices.
Just think, your Mac might one day ship with Apple’s version of a Leap Motion inside.
