After a decade and a half, Winamp will be going away

It has had a fair long run on the internet but, after 15 years on the internet, the Winamp media player will be shutting down. Those who were around for the launch of Windows 95 and Windows 98 in South Africa will be aware of just how pervasive the music software was online in the Nineties, though its prominence has dropped off in recent years.

The company behind the media player software hasn’t given any reasons why Winamp will be shutting down, saying only that the software will no longer be supported and that downloads of Winamp will cease next month. Other media players seem to have killed off the llama-whipping alternative. The Verge reports that Winamp will be gone for good come 21 December this year.

If, like us, you’re a little nostalgic for the old day of mIRC, Windows 98 SE, dial-up internet and the original Command and Conquer: Red Alert, you can head over to Winamp’s site for one last download before hunting down some of the media player skins that made it so popular back in the day.
