Amazon acquires flexible display manufacturer LiquaVista from Samsung

Amazon has acquired LiquaVista, a flexible display manufacturer that specialises in a technology called Electrowetting, from Samsung.

Confirmed yesterday by an Amazon spokesperson, speaking to CNET, the new acquisition has led to speculation that Amazon is planning on bringing full-colour displays to its e-ink Kindle tablets with the technology. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility, LiquaVista’s demonstration of a full-colour e-reader at CES in 2011 is what led to Samsung buying the company in the first place. The official statement from Amazon doesn’t give any hints in that specific direction however.

“We are always looking for new technologies we may be able to incorporate into our products over the long term. The Liquavista team shares our passion for invention and is creating exciting new technologies with a lot of potential. It’s still early days, but we’re excited about the possibilities and we look forward to working with Liquavista to develop these displays.”
