It finally happened. After months of playing the “will they, won’t they” game, Nintendo has decided to end our suffering. Here is your first look at the now officially titled Nintendo Switch 2:
Everything we ever dreamed of (and more)
Although it only features two minutes and change of footage, and there are still plenty of kinks to be worked out over the coming months, this trailer put to bed a host of rumours swirling around the console – like the bigger, magnetically-attached Joy-Cons – or the existence of the mysterious “C” button under on the right Joy-Con.
We also got a fresh look at the new, more rounded dock, a refreshed (and far-reaching) kickstand on the console’s rear, and what looks to be the Joy-Cons scurrying around like a bunch of mice and seemingly confirming the rumoured mouse mode – similar to Lenovo’s TrueStrike controllers featured on the Legion Go.
We already knew the Switch 2 would be fully backwards compatible with all of your digital Switch 1 games, but the trailer also confirmed that those Switch 1 cartridges tucked away under your TV will work, too. Nintendo does drop a slightly disturbing nugget of truth: “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, yeah?
As for when that’ll be, Nintendo only teases a 2025 release date for the console, with the promise of more news at a Nintendo Direct, pencilled in for 2 April later this year. That, at least, snuffs out the rumours of a speedy March release. We also got a look at what appears to be Mario Kart 9 – which will likely be a launch title for the console.
