My First Gran Turismo is a free-to-play GT game that hopes to put players in a spending mood

PlayStation is officially thirty years old (and two days, but who’s counting?) and that means a couple of things for players. First and foremost is the release of some satisfyingly nostalgic themes for the PS5, and second is the release of My First Gran Turismo – a free-to-play game that celebrates the vibes of the series’ early days and one that’ll hopefully put you in the spending mood.

“Whether it’s introducing kids to the joy of racing for the first time or reigniting a forgotten passion for driving, My First Gran Turismo was designed to be both approachable and immersive, created for everyone, with no limits on age or driving skill level,” said Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of Gran Turismo in a blog post.

Let’s get something straight: this isn’t a full-fledged Gran Turismo game. For that, you’ll need to drop R1,370 for the latest and greatest Gran Turismo 7 although there is a 50% sale on the PS store right now that’ll run until 21 December. We’d recommend trying out My First GT first, which offers a couple of cars, tracks, and general mechanics to help you get up to speed before taking on the real thing.

Specifically, there are 18 cars tucked away in My First GT, and three areas to test drive them all in. Those are the Kyoto Driving Park, Deep Forest Raceway, and Trial Mountain Circuit, though PlayStation isn’t spilling the beans about the sort of cars players can expect to drive. The trailer gives us a look at a couple, like the Lamborghini Countach LP400 and Honda NSX Type R.

My First Gran Turismo launches on PS4 and PS5 tomorrow, 6 December, and is yours to keep forever. It might be the first (and only) Gran Turismo you’ll ever need if the allure of over 400 cars and thirty-something race tracks isn’t strong enough to pull you into GT 7.  PS5 players are in for an extra treat with full PS VR 2 support added for My First GT. Having experienced GT 7 in VR, we can promise this won’t be something you want to miss.
