WWDC 2024 kicks off on 10 June, expect to see some artificial intelligence

WWDC 2024

WWDC 2024 was always going to happen. Apple is as regular as someone who is utterly religious about their fibre intake. It’s just a question of when it’ll all come out. The answer, in this case, is 10 June, which is when Apple will update the world on the latest from its software (and hardware) departments.

The word(s) for the event is AI. Or artificial intelligence. Or, technically, “Absolutely Incredible” but the not-suspicious-at-all capitalisation is a dead giveaway. Whatever else comes from the fruit company, there’s AI on the menu. The major question is what form it will take.

WWDC 2024, plus AI

We’d expect AI to turn up even if Apple wasn’t dropping absurdly large hints about it but what form it’ll take is uncertain. Based on older reports, we probably won’t see Siri repurposed to act as an on-device AI, although a lot can happen in a year. Apple is rumoured to be training up its own artificial intelligence system but there are also rumours that Google, OpenAI, and others are involved in the effort so it’s anyone’s guess what users will get this year.

Also due at WWDC 2024 are the usual slew of hardware announcements. Unlike some companies, Apple likes to try and keep its secrets so there’s no real confirmation of anything. There are, however, a few decent guesses. We might see a couple of device recaps, with an emphasis on their artificial smarts, and a collection of new AirPods of various descriptions. That’s in addition to updates on all of the company’s various operating systems, which is normal for WWDC. 2024 should be little different there.

The event keynote takes place on 10 June, at a time to be confirmed later (probably 10h00 PST, so 19h00 here in South Africa), while WWDC 2024 runs from 10 to 14 June. Stay tuned, we’ll have further updates as they become available.
