Curro to host inter-schools esports tournament

Curro, one of South Africa’s independent school networks, has announced its first inter-school esports tournament for young Gauteng learners. If you or someone you know is aiming for a career in esports, this could be a good place to start.

The tournament, dubbed Curro Clash LAN, will take place on Friday and Saturday, 24 – 25 March at Curro Krugersdorp High School. It aims to give aspiring competitors the opportunity to hone their skills and experience a formal competitive gaming environment. Likely a first for many.

The two-day-long tournament will see teams compete in a capture-the-flag game mode within Minecraft Education, DOTA 2, Overwatch 2, and Rocket League. All teams will play the same number of games. Their scores will then be ranked to establish a winner. The team that emerges victorious will receive prizes courtesy of Acer for Education.

While schools can enter their own esports teams, the tournament is also open to independent teams looking to make a name for themselves. As long as you can get a group of willing friends together (and you’re all between the ages of 13 and 18), you can enter and win. If you’re good enough, obviously.

Registration for the tournament will cost R150 per station and closes on Monday, 13 March. That entry fee will get you a comfy chair, a spot to put your gaming PC, and power and network cables to get you going.

If you think your team has what it takes, you’ll want to register at this link (sooner rather than later) to secure your spot. You should also let your adoring fans/parents know that there will be a selection of food stalls to keep everyone fed.

“Curro has held several inter-Curro eSports tournaments over the last few years. We want to share our phenomenal experience with fellow schools in the community, as only then will we be able to collectively build a unified eSports in Education offering.” says Magdeleen de Kock, Digital Transformation Facilitator: eSports project lead.
