Barely a month has passed since Honor announced the X9a would be making its way to the South African market before it’s taken the wraps off its next South African launch. Today, it’s the Honor X7a’s turn in the spotlight.
It’s about sending a message
Other than the 6,000mAh battery, everything else about the X7a falls into the ‘budget’ category, which should keep the price tag in the realm of ‘attainable’. The 8GB of RAM is coupled with 128GB of storage which is made better with the ability to expand storage with an SD Card up to 1TB.
The X7a isn’t sporting anything special where the screen is concerned. The 6.7in ‘FullView’ display, as Honor calls it, essentially means that the X7a offers a 720 x 1,600 HD display. If you were hoping for a 120Hz refresh rate as with the X9a, keep hoping. Although it will still hit 90Hz when you’re deploying those Hog Riders.
Honor makes use of a four-camera system again, with a 50MP main shooter doing most of the heavy lifting. The 5MP Wide, 2MP Macro and 2MP Depth sensors are all just there to show support (and occasionally help in specific scenarios). Flip it around, and there’ll be an 8MP selfie cam staring at you.
We aren’t particularly excited about the MediaTek Helio G37 chip that Honor has thrown in here. It’s probably capable of light gaming if you don’t mind turning the settings down. Outside of that, it’ll likely be a capable chipset that’ll handle everyday tasks. Unless you’re counting on 5G support. You’ll have to step up to the X9a if that’s a requirement.

But, when?
Unfortunately, local pricing and release dates aren’t confirmed just yet. According to Honor, the release is “right around the corner” which could mean anything from tomorrow or June. But Honor apparently doesn’t like to waste time. We’re expecting a mid-March launch. As for pricing, it’s likely we’ll only get wind once Honor decides to grace us with the release date.
If we’re judging by the overseas price, which nears €170 (R3,300), we could be looking at a price of around R4,500. If that’s accurate then, barring any glaring performance issues from the 3-year-old chip, the X7a could make for a compelling offer for budget buyers. But we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on one to know for sure.
