All good things must come to an end. By this, we mean that some Xbox 360 games that were previously available on the South African online store are going away in the very near future.
This is the result of an upcoming update for the console’s marketplace. It’s not just South Africa being whacked with the cancellation stick, either. In fact, as countries go, we’re being let off relatively lightly. That… might have something to do with our region having fewer games on its store, however.
Last call for (these) Xbox 360 purchases
Among the Xbox 360 games disappearing from South Africa’s local store are Call of Duty Ghosts and Advanced Warfare. Assassin’s Creed III and Black Flag are also disappearing. So are Mass Effect 2, Darksiders 2, Far Cry 2… in fact, there are a total of 32 well-known titles leaving the store next week.
But if you’re still keen on adding one of these titles to your backlog, there’s still time. It’s just the ability to buy them that’s going away. Xbox global product marketing manager Bree Adams, speaking to The Verge, explained that “These titles will no longer be purchasable on the Xbox 360 Store only, and titles that are available to be purchased on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Stores will remain purchasable.”
“You will still be able to play discs or previously downloaded games on your Xbox 360 and modern consoles if they are backwards compatible titles.”
In other words, you’ll still be able to buy the affected titles via the Xbox One (provided they’re available in that store). Once bought, if it’s before the cutoff, you’ll be able to download these games to supported consoles at any time. But if you’re still using a 360 (and we don’t blame you, it’s still an excellent console) and you drag your feet, you may have to make another plan. Like buying original discs on eBay at a massive markup.
