It’s happened. Petrol is going up in the month of December, and diesel finally sees a drop in price. Now, before you rush out to the gas station – read this first. The prices aren’t reflected at the stations yet – that’ll happen tomorrow, which is the first Wednesday of the month. Diesel drivers will want to hold off until then. Petrol drivers… yeah. You may want to get going. Like, now.
We already had an idea of what the official fuel prices were going to look like, of course. Sure, we were a little hopeful that the petrol increase wouldn’t be quite so drastic. But we don’t always get what we want.
Good news everyone! (Not including petrol drivers)
The numbers here aren’t just decided by a manatee pulling balls out of an aquarium, as much as it may feel like it. The numbers are decided by the Department of Energy, basing the price on the current Rand/US Dollar exchange and the current price of refined oil in the US.
With that out of the way, here are your official fuel prices for the month of December:
- Petrol 95: increase of 59 cents per litre (R0.59)
- Petrol 93: increase of 59 cents per litre (R0.59)
- Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 157 cents per litre (R1.57)
- Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 152 cents per litre (R1.52)
- Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 57 cents per litre (R0.57)

And it’s going to stay this way until next year. 4 January specifically – the day most of South Africa is returning to work. So if you’re looking to fill up before work kicks off, consider going a couple of days before. And if you’re only heading back to work after the fourth, keep it to yourself.
