Customers on MTN’s network have somehow managed to access Downdetector – reporting troubles with the internet service provider since the early hours of this morning, 22 November. Issues range from a complete lack of signal to intermittent coverage. A number of Stuff’s team have corroborated those claims by the simple expedient of checking their own devices.
MTN is down bad
Companies that piggyback off the network also began experiencing the same troubles. Afrihost and Axxess noted that they were aware of the outage. “We are currently investigating with MTN and working on restoring services as soon as possible,” Axxess said.
“We are aware of a connectivity problem affecting LTE and mobile clients,” Afrihost said in an update published around 8AM this morning. “Engineers are looking at the problem and hope to have it resolved soon.”

The service provider responded to the public outcry, letting its customers know that it had found the issue and was working to restore the network as soon as possible.

Later, while speaking with MyBroadband, the provider confirmed that the outage was due to a fault on its network. “Our engineers are attending to the matter with the aim of restoring connectivity as soon as possible,” the operator said.
As it stands, MTN is still down. The latest snapshot from Downdetector shows the number of customers with concerns growing. MTN has failed to provide an update on its official channels as to when a network restoration could be expected. With our luck, it’ll be fixed five minutes after you read this. But don’t take this as a sure sign. It could be a long one – prepare yourself, if you can.
