WhatsApp launching Call Links, tests 32-user video calls

Video and audio calls on WhatsApp will be far easier to join soon once Meta rolls out Call Links – something that Zoom made popular during its run as the video calling app. Now, WhatsApp is borrowing the feature, which lets users simply tap a link to join a call.

Mark Zuckerberg announced Call Links through a Facebook post on Monday, saying that it would roll out this week. He also mentioned that the company is testing video calls that support up to 32 users. He failed to give any more information on when we can expect that to show up.

Users will begin receiving the latest update some time this week. Once it lands, you’ll see a new button in the calls tab on WhatsApp’s front page. Click ‘Create Call Link’ and send out a link to eight contacts in your list. Once it has been sent, the receiver just taps (or clicks) the link and they’re instantly added to the call.

Once the update to the call user limit turns up, it might spell danger for Zoom and Google Meet. Both already offer a far larger user limit than WhatsApp’s upcoming 32. But, the problem with those apps is the time limit for each meeting. Zoom only allows meetings for 40 minutes at a time, while Meet has an hour time limit. WhatsApp has no limits (yet) which could help put it on the map.
