myTank is an app that wants to help you save money on fuel

Finding a half-decent petrol station can be a pain. You’re not sure what the bathroom situation is, whether there’s a Wimpy restaurant nearby and most importantly, the price of diesel. Well, myTank is a local app that hopes to put an end to all that and save you as much fuel money as it can.

Despite the extra help, you’ll still struggle to find a station that won’t feel like a rip-off. This way a few extra bucks will stay in your pocket rather than the station’s coffers.

myTank offers more customization than other apps offering a similar service, making it especially handy for those going on any long-distance journeys. myTank requires that users create an account and select their fuel tank size, fuel type or which rewards programmes they’re currently a part of. Once it has this, it suggests the best stations in the vicinity. Better yet, it’ll show you how much a trip to a specific station would cost you. It also accounts for reward benefits.

The app is definitely aimed at diesel drivers, for now at least. Why? Because petrol prices in SA are regulated, meaning the price of petrol has to be the same around the country. Diesel, on the other hand, is not regulated. That leaves the price-per-litre up to the station that sells it. That’s where myTank is most useful, showing nearby stations with the best diesel/trip cost ratio.

The creator of myTank is still working to get as many oil companies involved with the app as possible. Stations that opt to have their information listed can update it with details such as; load shedding status, restaurants, ATMs and any running specials.

myTank is available on the Google Play Store and as a website. iOS users can add the web version to their home screen if needed. If you’d like a visual demonstration, check out the tutorial video below.
