Vivo’s latest flagship smartphone could come with 200W fast-charging

Fast charging is something Vivo tends to pride itself on, with 120W charging becoming the company’s standard for its latest smartphones. But if the reports are true, it looks like Vivo could be leveling up its game once again.

Rumours indicate that a 200W charger has just been certified in China, with Vivo beginning production on the chargers. If we were to see a 200W charger, it could be released along with Vivo’s iQOO 10 Pro smartphone. We could even see the smartphone before the end of the year.

We could also see a 65W wireless fast-charge feature with the launch of the iQOO 10 Pro. Vivo is just spoiling us at this point.

Setting a 200W standard

The reports come from a reliable tipster known as Digital Chat Station, via GizmoChina.

Vivo’s current flagship — the iQOO 9 Pro, which isn’t available in SA — already has 120W charging in addition to 50W wireless charging. If the current rumours prove correct, a new standard will have been set in the industry. Samsung and Apple will try to get in on the action, while Vivo will already be thinking of 250W charge speeds for the iQOO 11.

Not only will 200W charging be the standard for Vivo’s new phone – it’ll be backwards compatible too. Users will be able to use a single charger with Vivo’s 120W, 80W and 66W devices. This wouldn’t be especially useful unless you’re the sort who carries around a few devices wherever you go.

This isn’t the first 200W charger ever made. Realme developed a charger capable of reaching 200W but it wasn’t able to safely sustain those speeds. It was eventually capped at 150W.

How fast is too fast?

When it comes to device charging, being ‘too fast’ isn’t an issue for most people. But how quick would it be to charge a device up fully with a 200W charger? Last year, Xioami demonstrated what this would look like on a modified Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro. And it was glorious. Below is a video showing exactly that.

In the video, the smartphone hit 50% in just three minutes. Three minutes! And it took a full eight minutes to hit that 100% mark. With 200W speeds, we’ll never have an excuse to be out of battery ever again.

It does raise questions about the health of a smartphone being charged so quickly. Some end up leaving their phones plugged in overnight, not a great idea when it’s done in eight minutes or less. After that, the device will be fed power it won’t need, damaging the battery. We’re sure Vivo will include a Battery Protector feature, but it’s still a problem to look out for.

We’ll be awaiting Vivo’s official announcement on 200W charging. Even if the rumours turn out to be false, Vivo wouldn’t be caught dead releasing a phone without upgrading its battery specs. At the least, we’ll likely see a 150W charger if the 200W is denied.
