This is how the ad-supported Disney+ tier will work when it launches

Disney+ has only just launched in South Africa, but there’s already something waiting in the not-too-far-off future. In addition to the current pricing (R120/m or R1,200/year), there’s an ad-supported tier inbound for the service.

This means, yes, there’s a version of Disney+ coming which will show ads. Turns out, it’s not going to be quite the awful experience you might think. Ads will be limited to just minutes each hour, according to several reports.

Advertising on Disney’s platform will, according to various sources, be limited to just four minutes of ads an hour. That’s a pretty low number, as far as these things go. It seems less objectionable than a 30-second ad roll every time you load a YouTube video, at least.

But there’s more. The company won’t run ads at all for the kid’s profile on an ad-supported account. And even if your offspring are sitting on the couch watching something a little more… grown up, all advertising will be family-friendly. That means no alcohol, no politics, and nothing that has even a vaguely adult theme.

There’s no detail on what an ad-supported Disney+ account will cost, but it’s supposed to launch in the States later this year. Once the whole thing has been worked out, other countries will also get a taste of ads, as only the Magic Kingdom can deliver them. You won’t only need to absorb them subliminally via The Ad-vengers films.
