Any short clip can shared as a Facebook Reel, if app developers choose to go that way

Meta-owned Facebook is trying to up its video game. Facebook now allows third-party apps to add a new ‘Sharing to Reels’ option to their apps.

This makes it much easier for creators to share to Facebook instead of uploading video content directly to the social media giant. Tools will be available to customise a given Reel, all from an outside app. It all works in much the same way as posting directly to Facebook, and with much the same effect.

“Reels can include audio, AR effects, captions with hashtags or tags for other accounts. When a person shares their Reel from a third-party app to Facebook people can easily follow along, like, comment, and share with friends and family,” said Meta.

Short-video content has taken over the world. From Instagram TV and TikTok to YouTube Shorts, most social media platforms are jumping into the short video game. And what is shared on one platform usually winds up being shared on all the others as well.

Facebook’s new feature sounds enticing for third-party platforms. Users sharing video content to Facebook Reels this way will expand reach with little effort. But, right now, third-party support appears limited. Facebook lists platforms Smule, Vita, and VivaVideo as current partners. We’re… not entirely sure who they are.

There is a developers page for third-party apps interested in adding the feature that explains how to do so.

The feature is rolling out globally on Android and iOS. Whether you’ll use it… actually, loads of folks will probably use it.
