The next instalment in the Battlefield franchise was announced not too long ago and this one has us — along with many others — somewhat excited.
Well, it turns out EA thought this release cycle might be going a bit too smoothly. So they decided to shake things up a bit by letting us know there will be bots in some multiplayer matches.
At the game’s announcement event, it was revealed that the All-Out Warfare game mode will allow up to 128 players but it turns out that this will likely not only be humans.

In an update to the Battlefield Briefing EA Answers page, the company writes, “As a multiplayer-only experience, it’s important for us to let you play Battlefield 2042 when and how you want.”
They go on to say that for multiplayer matches, “AI soldiers are used for server-filling capabilities, ensuring your matches remain full, no matter your location.”
Let us be clear, this isn’t inherently a bad thing. For players in remote locations and far away from multiplayer servers, trying to find a game with enough people could prove challenging. Here, the inclusion of bots allows those players to experience the carnage and chaos that 128 player battles will presumably bring.
That is, however, only if the AI in question adds to the experience — like another player would — instead of detracts from it. When you see things like a bot stuck on an ankle-high rock or baffled by the unimaginable complexity of a cover system, then you just have to say that it’s fine. But it’s not really fine and you just can’t get into it because they’ll never understand… because they’re bots.
You’ll also be able to play the co-op mode with your friends against them, or, if you don’t have too many of those, hop into a solo match to hone your skills.
Real players will be given preference over the AI so if you’re lucky you might not ever see one and maybe if you do you won’t even notice.
There’s no telling what we’re going to get just yet but a large part of the multiplayer experience will depend on it so let’s all hope that we get Unreal Tournament bots and not Rocket League bots.
