Hurry up, Disney+: The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special looks amazing

Lego Star Wars Holiday Special

The first trailer for the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special dropped last week and it’s something you should definitely watch. Many folks might be wondering why this is such a big deal. You need to understand the context behind the Holiday Special. Also, if you’re actually sitting there genuinely wondering why you should care… just have an imagination and some heart, man. It’s Lego Star Wars. That’s always worth some excitement. We at Stuff adore Star Wars so you can just jog your grumpy self away.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special sees the heroes of the modern Star Wars trilogy whisked back in time through the magic of some kind of crystal discovered in a Jedi temple. What this means is that the writers have given themselves permission to take viewers on a trip through the franchise’s past and poke fun at… well, everything.

Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, away!

That certainly seems to be the tone in the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, as The Emperor chastises Kylo Ren for not wearing a shirt (itself a reference to a great internet meme) and past and present Han Solo debate on who should take the first shot. There’s a lot of material to work with and it certainly seems like the writers are having fun.

Of course, what makes this all the funnier is knowing that this Holiday Special is in its very nature a riff on the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special which is widely considered to be one of the worst movies of all time. It featured some obviously bored performances from the original cast of Star Wars, some utterly bizarre animation and even Chewbacca’s son, Lumpawaroo. Yeah, it was a wild time.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special drops on Disney+ on 17 November. If you’re in a region (like South Africa) that doesn’t currently have access to Disney+ plus, there are… other avenues you could explore to watch it. We can’t tell you what they are though, so just use your head.
