Apparently, Sony makes cars now — introducing the Vision-S concept

There aren’t many non-car companies that we would trust making a car. But if we have to choose one, it would be Sony. The company has been making game consoles/controllers and games for yonks with its PlayStation brand. So, they should know a thing or two about control/movement and design, right?

So Sony went ahead and announced a bunch of things at CES 2020, one of which completely caught us off guard. ‘Twas a happy surprise to see Sony announce an electric vehicle called the Vision-S concept. 

Am I seeing VisionS?

The Vision-S and takes the shape of a sleek EV with a highly advanced autonomous driving system and a design that might make you think of a mashup between a Porsche Taycan and a Tesla Model S. But it looks like Sony showed off this concept mainly to showcase the tech it can offer the automotive industry. 

It was also developed in collaboration with big names such as Nvidia, Continental, Bosch, ZF, Magna and Qualcomm. The zero-emissions sedan is fitted with a total of 33 sensors that are primarily used to detect people and objects both outside of the car, and inside. Other than that, we didn’t get much in terms of car-specs. We do know that the Vision-S has a pair of 200kW electric motors and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. It also has a top speed of 240 km/h.

The dashboard looks like an Iron Man lab, with displays covering most of the surface area. These are likely used to monitor data from the wide array of sensors. Even more, it’s got 360 audio and always-on connectivity.

Nevertheless, we don’t know if Sony will even put this pretty piece of machinery into production at all. And if it does, we’re not convinced that it’ll hit South Africa at all.
