This week Huawei subsidiary Honor announced the Honor View 20, the successor to last year’s View 10 (which we didn’t get here), and it looks even better. One might even say, “infinitely better”.
The View 20 will feature a full-display ‘infinity design’ with a cut-out or ‘punch-hole’ front-facing camera in the display. Around the back, it has a new Sony 48MP camera sensor. Something that looks set to be the new standard in upcoming devices — Xiaomi’s next handset and Huawei’s Nova 4 are both rumoured to feature similarly high-resolution sensors, and Samsung has designed 48MP sensors of their own. No points for guessing where those are going to show up.
But back to the View 20’s majestic rear-camera sensor — it’s based on Sony’s IMX586 48MP sensor, and features a resolution of 8,000 × 6,000 pixels. This should mean incredibly sharp and detailed images, even when shooting in low light.
Talking about low-light shots, remember Huawei’s previous two flagships? (The P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro). They both offer insanely impressive low-light capabilities — especially with ‘night mode’ turned on — and it looks like Huawei’s sub-brand is going to benefit from its parent’s camera tech. That’s good news for us, because it means we’ll be able to get similar image quality without having to spend R15k or more on a phone.
The View 20’s rear sensor can also capture full-res pictures at 30FPS, and record 4K/90FPS video, along with 720p/480FPS slow-mo video, without cropping. Given how impressive its full-sized camera sensors have been lately, we wouldn’t expect any less from a Sony sensor.
What do we think about the ‘cut-out’/’hole-punch’/‘little-black-hole’ in the display? We think we need to get used to it, and quickly. Like the notch, which is now totally normal, it looks set to be the new standard for sneaking front-facing cameras into edge-to-edge displays on Android phones. Samsung’s just announced the A8 handset that also features a cut-out selfie-cam, and we’ll likely see it on the Galaxy S10, too.
