Huawei’s more budget-friendly sub-brand, Honor, launched in South Africa earlier this year with two devices, the Honor 9 Lite and 7X. Now the company has announced they will start selling the latest flagship in their Hero series, the Honor 8X, here too.
Almost two months after it launched in China, the Honor 8X will be available locally in SA. And the company says it’s investing in the local market for the long haul, putting paid to rumours we wouldn’t be seeing new Honor devices once stock of the previously launched pair of devices was depleted.
Peering under the hood
The Honor 8X is powered by a Kirin 710 chipset and comes in three variations, each of which features a notched 6.5in Full HD+ LCD display. There’s the entry-level version with 4GB RAM (and 64GB storage), the 6GB RAM version (also with 64GB RAM), and the 6GB RAM iteration that boasts 128GB storage space. Unfortunately, South Africans will only get the 4GB variations at this stage.
Shutter-wise, the Honor 8X has three camera sensors, but not like the recently launched Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Instead, the 8X features two sensors on the rear — a 20MP + 2MP combination dual camera. And the front boasts an f/2.0 aperture 16MP sensor for optimising your selfie game.
Honor has included some additional top-notch photography features such as AI scene recognition, portrait mode, slow-motion video shooting and a time-lapse mode.
The 8X runs the EMUI 8.2 flavoured Android 8.1 Oreo OS and packs a 3,750mAh battery to keep everything running well. The device is available in three colour variations — blue, black and red (keeping it simple, we see).
The main selling point of the Honor devices is their quality and specs in relation to price. The Honor 8X looks set to continue this trend with its R5,500 price tag. Given how much we liked the 7X, we can’t wait to try it out.
