Disney, the mouse-fuelled media juggernaut that now owns Star Wars and most things Marvel (all of them, when the contracts expire), has had its own streaming service in the works for a while. The company has now made the service’s title official, revealing a handful of the starting lineup when it launches in late 2019. Say hi to Disney+.
Not the most imaginative name, we know, but hopefully Disney have saved the creativity for the just-announced collection of series that will be coming to the service.
At least a few fans will have their wishes come true when Disney+ launches. The media company has a live-action Loki series in the works, saying “Marvel Studios is developing a series based on Loki, the god of mischief, to star Tom Hiddleston.” This should go down well with the rabid (and occasionally weird) Loki fanbase online. But the trickster isn’t the only one getting some face-time.
The Mandalorian is already set for Disney+, there are stories from the Monsters Inc. and High School Musical universes coming and we’re fairly certain that every Marvel Cinematic Universe film will wind up on the service — something that will be a drawcard for serious binge-watchers with a superhero bent.
Disney+’s late 2019 launch has only been confirmed for the United States at the moment. We’ll let you know more once we have details about when (and if) Disney+ will be appearing on these shores. Otherwise we might have to go VPNing again.
