Prepare your nostalgia muscles, because the mini console will be available from 3 December, which is the date PlayStation launched the original console way back in 1994. We don’t know about local availability yet, but we have reached out to Ster Kinekor for that info and will update this story as soon as we hear back from them.
Sony’s diminutive console feature the likes of Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3 (the best Tekken), Wild Arms, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, and 15 other titles that have yet to be announced. We’re especially keen to find out which other games will be here — hopefully a spot of Resident Evil, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (3 for both, please), Soul Reaver, and Crash Bandicoot make the cut. We’re also expecting Gran Turismo — that one’s almost a given.
The console features an HDMI output (so you won’t struggle matching AV cables in your TV), and two of the original, wired controllers — so no analogue sticks for you. You’ll soon see just how hard the older generation had it with regard to camera controls. The console looks indistinguishable from the original, with the only difference being that it’s almost half the size. How very Nintendo of Sony.
At this stage it’s available for pre-order in the US for $100 (around R1,500 without tax and such), but you’ll get an HDMI cable, a USB cable, and two controllers included. We’ll update with local info as it becomes available.
