LG’s first Android One smartphone is… also a G7?

Okay, how many times is LG going to be releasing the LG G7? We’ve already got the G7 ThinQ and now the South Korean company has announced two more entrants in the G7 series: An Android One handset called the G7 One and a cheaper version of their flagship device called the G7 Fit.

Both handsets are on show at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, Germany but LG has spilled all of the beans before anyone’s so much as gotten their hands on these two. This is what we know.

LG G7 One

LG’s G7 One is the company’s first foray into the world of Android One — that delightfully stripped-down operating system that handles the same way it would on one of Google’s Pixel devices. That means no LG skin or extraneous apps to have to delete before you have a phone that you’re happy with — just add in the usual suspects from the Play Store and off you go.

The handset’s packing a 6.1in QHD+ display, a similar design to the G7 ThinQ, a Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM. Not a world-beater but LG’s throwing in its 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, Boombox speakers and other sound tech to go along with the vanilla Android 8.1 Oreo installation. The handset has a dedicated Google Assistant button (shades of Bixby there), Google Lens, a 16MP f/1.6 main camera and an 8MP f/1.9 selfie cam as well. Most of the bases are… pretty much covered.

LG G7 Fit

The G7 Fit, on the other hand, features slightly fewer specs. Which is fine, because it’s also supposed to be a cheaper version of the LG ThinQ — though not so cheap as to be a mid-ranger, which is a weird space to occupy. That might explain the Snapdragon 821 processor (LG must have had a few lying about), 4GB of RAM and 32GB and 64GB storage options. The handset is keeping the 6.1in QHD+ display and a collection of the G7 ThinQ’s other features — like AI CAM, the 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, that Boombox Speaker and DTS:X 3D Surround Sound. There’s Android 8.1 Oreo installed, though it’ll be LG’s version rather than the pared-back Android One OS the G7 One is getting.

Stuff has a man on the ground at IFA 2018 and we’ll be reporting back once we’ve had a chance to actually go hands-on with some of the devices being announced this next week. We’re expecting availability info to appear shortly afterwards, so we’ll be keeping you posted.
