CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 is looking even more amazing than we expected

Future media, take note: This is what a cyberpunk game should look like — though CD Projekt’s new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, a title that has been in development for some time now, is a little brighter than we were expecting. Not that it matters, since they’ve manage to capture the cyberpunk aesthetic regardless. From idyllic luxury lives (for those who can afford it) to short and brutal endings in the darkness, this is looking like Bladerunner: The Video Game (no, not the Westwood point-and-click) — though with CD Projekt at the helm, we can expect a sprawling story that engages players over a considerable period of time. We’re expecting to hear more from this one soon so stay tuned.

Bethesda’s Doom Eternal is going to be gloriously infernal

Bethesda had a whole raft of announcements at their pre-E3 conference this weekend and we could have populated the whole list here with all of them — they were that good. But we’re going to be sticking with Doom Eternal, the sequel to the 2016 Doom reboot that caught everyone’s violence-seeking natures by the neck and tossed them headfirst into a pool of blood. Based purely on the strength of that title, this one’s going to be off the hook. The teaser shows off a glorious hellscape, where players will be able to take the Doom Slayer out for a pleasant walk surrounded by the damned. You’ll be all alone against them, which hardly seems fair. They don’t stand a chance.

Activision and From Software are teaming up for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Look, Activision doesn’t surprise us often. It’s usually just Call of Duty, Skylanders, and whatever other franchise they’ve decided to milk until it collapses under its own weight — though CoD is proving resilient. This one threw us off, a little. The company has announced, along with masters-of-the-hardcore From Software, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. You’re going to have some idea of what’s coming if you’ve played Dark Souls or Bloodborne — we recognise some of the parry mechanics and boss fight tactics — but Sekiro looks to play even faster thanks to a grappling hook which can apparently be used for traversal as well as combat. Playing as an unkillable ninja warrior against all manner of grisly foe? Where do we sign up? Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will launch next year.

Just Cause 4 is officially official and looks suitably bonkers

The reveal for this one was spoiled when a pre-order link for Just Cause 4 popped up on Steam ahead of time but the open-world action game was officially debuted on Microsoft’s stage over the weekend. Rico Rodriguez is back with his grappling hook, wingsuit, more vehicles than you can shake a remote-detonated explosive at, and a complete lack of sanity. We’ve seen him surf missiles and blow up rocket ships but taking on a tornado? Come on guys, what’s next? We gonna see him riding a motorcycle along a tsunami? Actually, that would be pretty sweet. We can’t wait to see some actual gameplay for this one — the madly-explosive series has always been a lot of fun and we’re not expecting much to change on that score.

Dante and Nero are back in Devil May Cry 5. DMC… never happened, apparently

Unpopular opinion time: We actually like the Devil May Cry reboot, DMC. Apparently… we were alone in that assessment. Why else would the series return to its roots and its old storyline after a decade in hibernation? Devil May Cry 5 is coming and it looks to be starring a maimed (but upgraded) Nero and a whole mess of new enemies. The third-person action gun-and-melee combat the series is famed for is going to be back (you can see snippets in between the pre-rendered footage) and the series’ overblown supporting characters are still in full effect — it’s like the game never went away. Oh yeah, and Dante… the real Dante… is back. Expect Devil May Cry 5 in the first half of 2019.
