But can your phone do this? LG claims its new K7i handset can repel mozzies

Look, your phone might have a stunning camera or all the power in the world but we doubt it can match the features fielded by the new LG K7i. The new entry-level device, which LG has just launched in India, comes with a little something called Mosquito Away. Guess what that does?

Allegedly, anyway. Mosquito Away is a feature that LG has previously included in some of its air conditioners which uses ultrasonic waves to repel mosquitos — which is where the ‘allegedly’ comes in. LG says, according to CNN, that their own tests have shown that the feature is effective at repelling up to 72% of mosquitos.

But there’s a problem there — several studies also claim to have shown that LG’s ultrasonic tech won’t have any effect at all on mozzies. It does, though, have an effect on humans who like the concept of not having to apply smelly mosquito repellent. We guess you could sit with the phone next to some stagnant water in the evening and see for yourself whether it works?

In more conventional phone features, the LG K7i is launching with a 5in 720p display, quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage — pretty bare-bones stuff. The K7i fields Android 6.0, an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front cam, a 2,500mAh battery (removable), and microSD support into the dual-SIM handset. As well as (maybe) the ability to keep mozzies at bay.

It’s landing in the Indian market for the local equivalent of about R1,700. It is unlikely that we’ll see its like here in South Africa, though. Pity, we’d have like to try out its bug-repelling qualities for ourselves.
