If you want a dual-camera Samsung handset, there’s always the Galaxy J7+…

We all know, or should know, that Samsung has finally leaped into the dual-camera space with the announcement of the Galaxy Note 8 but not everyone is going to be able to afford the R18,500 price of admission. For those people, there might be some hope in sight as Samsung has another, less expensive dual-cam smartphone incoming in the Galaxy J7+.

Which, yes, is yet another version of the company’s mid-range J7 handset, which counts the stock, Dual, and Prime editions as members. Possibly more, for all we know. But this one has a better camera than all those other losers — dual sensors, in fact. There’s a 13MP f/1.7 and a 5MP f/1.9 lens at the back, making this Samsung’s second official dual-cam handset.

Not to be outdone, the front sensor is a 16MP monster, in case you need to take selfies as the International Space Station whizzes by in the distance. Okay, not really but you get the idea.

The rest of the phone’s specs are… not that bad, actually. There’s one of MediaTek’s Helio P20 processors, a 2.3GHz octa-core, running the show and 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. You can add more space if you want to, that’s supported. The display is a 5.5in HD screen, the handset is USB-C — that’s never going away — and there is a 3,000mAh battery humming away. Non-removable, we’re sad to report. Plus a fingerprint sensor and a range of Samsung-specific software features like Face Detection. Decent collection, that.

The Galaxy J7+ is only confirmed for Thailand, of all places, so far. That isn’t to say that it’s only going to be there, that’s just the only place that has spilled the beans thus far. If it does make it to South Africa, we’d expect it to start somewhere around the R5,000 mark — the standard Galaxy J7 sells for R4,000 here in SA, down from an RRP of R4,400 while the J7 Prime still has an RRP of about R5,000.
