LG’s Q8 handset is all about screen and sound. Okay, and the camera

LG is doing what it always does and is making more affordable versions of their flagship smartphone for the year. The newest is the Q8, a phone that strips down a few specs while still offering users an excellent screen, sound playback, and, everyone’s favourite toy, a great camera.

Except that the LG Q8 owes more than a little of its DNA to the V20, except that LG has taken away some of the size and added waterproofing. Which is okay, we’re totally fine with that trade if it means we get that lovely IP67 rating.

We’d also be getting a 5.2in QHD display, one which uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4. LG’s secondary display from the V20, a 106 x 1040 version in this handset, is also present. The main concession to the Q8 being a more budget handset is the inclusion of a Snapdragon 820 processor, which is a step down from the G6’s Snapdragon 821.

4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage make up the ‘gigs’ portion of this phone, while the whole thing will be powered by 3,000mAh of battery. Android 7 and a fingerprint sensor will come standard and LG’s are throwing in a 32-bit quad-DAC, in case you have some high-res audio that needs listening to.

Which brings us to the camera. LG’s got a dual rear camera set for the Q8, comprising a 13MP main shooter and an 8MP secondary for wide-angle shots. In front is a 5MP selfie-cam.

The main question then is: When will we see it? And the answer to that is uncertain. The LG Q8 was outed by the company’s Italian website, with no announcement of broader availability having taking place yet. Pricing, then, is as much of a mystery.
