LG’s bringing its FullVision display to three mid-range handsets

Korean electronics company LG has announced it’s bringing the 18:9 “FullVision” display it debuted in its flagship G6 smartphone to its new Q Series handsets — mid-range smartphones that offer solid specs at decidedly sub-flagship prices.

LG says it’ll be offering three Q variants, the Q6+, Q6 and Q6α. At the top of the pile there’s the Q6+ with its 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. In the middle of the pack there’s the Q6 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. And the cheapest of the lot will be the Q6α with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage.

All three handsets will tout a 5.5in FHD+ FullVision display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels (for a respectable pixel density of 442ppi). That means an 18:9 aspect ratio (we still can’t fathom why it’s not referred to as 2:1), which LG claims makes for a more pleasing video watching and gaming experience. LG’s also kept the thin bezels and aluminium body from the G6, which we’ve got to concede gives the Q devices a suitably premium look.

LG’s opted for a 13MP rear camera and 5MP wide-angle front-facing camera for each handset, along with a 3,000mAh battery and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 435 processor.

“The LG Q6 is a blend of premium features, great performance and attractive pricing, a combination that is extremely important to us as we look at the way consumers are using smartphones around the world,” says Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The Q series is our way of getting the superb experiences with the essence of the LG’s premium line-ups to more consumers’ hands and pockets.”

LG says the device will go on sale in Asia next month, with Europe, Latin America and North America to follow. There’s no indication when the devices will land in South Africa — or whether we’ll get all three members of the trio. We’ll let you know when we do.
